Description:

Shafique el-Fahkri, 19, was admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with a steel chair leg embedded about 10cm through his head to his neck, where it had partially severed an artery. He walked out of hospital 19 days after being admitted, with no brain damage or loss of sight. The horrific injury was sustained in a brawl in the city outside Metro nightclub in Bourke St. Fireman cut the chair away from Mr el-Fahkri's head at the scene. Doctors told the Northcote teen's father, Moses el-Fahkri, they were astonished the youth had survived. Shafique el-Fahkri paid an emotional tribute to the surgeons who saved his life. "It's a miracle. I owe them my life'' he said. Moses el-Fahkri revealed a crack team of five surgeons deliberated for hours on how to remove the chair leg from his son. The relieved father said the family was deeply religious and also attributed his son's survival to God. "When I first saw Shafique the doctors couldn't even tell me he would survive,'' he said. "My boy had a team of surgeons spend hours deciding the best way (to operate). They conferred with each other for the strategy they would adopt and they were proven right. " "He should make a full recovery. It is miraculous - and that's quoting the surgeons.'' In an intricate three-hour operation, the surgeons removed the metal, lodged dangerously close to his brain, through the right side of the former Xavier College student's neck. A plastic surgeon repaired his face. Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman Trudy Habner said many medicos worked to save Mr el-Fahkri. "It was a very complex surgery, with a team of specialists who operated on the patient,'' she said. "We expect he will make a full recovery.'' The young Collingwood fan's memory of the Bourke St incident was vague, but his father said he was not a violent person and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another 19-year-old man has been charged with recklessly causing serious injury. "

funny thing is the guy that threw the chair probably got a few days community service. and then a week later all this politicians formed a council to try and figure out why there is so much youth violence.

No, that guy had it go thru his brain. This guy had no brain injury. But I remember not too long ago a guy dropped a nail gun and it landed upsidedown and shot a nail up into his mouth, through the roof of his mouth and into his brain. It knocked him out cold. He never knew he was shot, till the dentist xrayed him and told him.
